Summer Program sample workshops. Actual offerings vary and subject to change.

In and Out of The Garden

Students will be introduced to the basic elements of drawing through careful observation of the environment in the Magic Garden. In each session the young artists' drawings are compiled in a sketch book to help them to document their progress. Learning to identify and visually translate flowers, vegetables, trees, birds and insects is a key part of this workshop's nature theme. Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the natural world around them, while also having an opportunity to experience varied art materials to express themselves both realistically and imaginatively.

Nature's Gifts

Using the Magic Garden's colorful, summer bounty to inspire young artists, we will use natural materials to create collages, textile prints, sculptures and vibrant paintings. A variety of media will be explored including fabric, pressed flowers and clays.

Acrylic Painting for Beginners

Learn the basics of acrylic painting while working in the Magic Garden. The main emphasis of this workshop will be understanding the color wheel, color mixing, translating values, plus depicting light and shadow. Young artists will paint with an understanding of the elementary concepts of color and design.

Artists in the Garden

Working within the Magic Garden to inspire their visual vocabulary, young artists will create paintings while acquiring new creative skills. Students will have an opportunity to develop their original ideas using still life and landscape themes within this stimulating country environment. Influential artists who have used gardens as a subject will be discussed.

Printmaking Magic

In each of these workshop sessions, students will enjoy hands-on experiences with an interesting array of printmaking tools -- foam brushes, carved stamps, vegetables, leaves -- all used in concert to create unique two-dimensional pieces of art. In addition, three-dimensional sculpted clay pieces will be embellished with each young artist's individual designs.
